9 Easy ways to lower the price on your next move.

Moving is time consuming, stressful and of course, expensive. In fact, hiring professional movers to relocate is almost sure to cost you several hundred dollars! Thankfully, if working over one’s hard earned money on things like cardboard boxes and professional movers doesn’t sound appealing to you, you’re in luck! Whether you’re moving across the street or across the country, there are quite a few tricks to help you save money while moving to a new home. Here’s a look at 9 easy ways you can save hundreds on your next big move.

Find as many free boxes as possible before moving.

Moving boxes aren’t cheap! Before you start packing, seek out free moving supplies from various stores, online marketplaces, community groups and friends. Not only is the process of finding free boxes easy, but it’s also a surefire way to save hundreds of dollars on moving expenses. You can find potential moving boxes on Craigslist, Freecycle, U-Haul Box Exchange, Nextdoor.com and local Facebook groups. If you’re looking to take the search offline, check out the local grocery stores, liquor stores, big box chains, offices, recycling drop-off points, and schools. Of course, you can always ask friends, family and neighbors for any extra moving boxes they may have lying around. see more tips

Use Moving.com discounts for moving supplies

Of course, sometimes you just have to suck it up and pay for moving supplies – especially if you need specific boxes to fit unusual objects, such as mirrors or artwork. Thankfully, you can still avoid spending big bucks on bubble wrap and supplies.

Tip: Before ordering the boxes, figure out exactly how many you’re going to need for the move by using our

Choose a cheaper date and time to move

One of the easiest ways to save money during a move is to simply choose the right moving date. When hiring a professional moving company in Massachusetts or Rhode Island, the date and time of your move can make all the difference when it comes to the ease of your relocation and the size of your bank account. Specially in Boston Massachusetts has a lot’s of students looking for moving services starting August, September and October. Avoid moving during the “peak moving season” from May to August. Instead, opt for a mid-week, mid-month moving date between the months of September and April. Demand is typically lowest during the mid-week and mid-month days. Therefore, your costs will likely be lower as well. Of course, many of us don’t have the option to move during the most ideal time of the year. If this is the case for you (and you’re looking to save money), I suggest considering a DIY move instead.

Get quotes from multiple local movers.

Before officially hiring a moving company, make sure you’ve received quotes from at least three local movers. Each estimator should conduct either an in-person inspection or a video survey of your belongings before giving you a quote. If you’re moving out-of-state or long distance, some moving companies charge will be determined by the weight of your things. So be sure to tell the estimator which items you will and won’t be moving to ensure the most accurate quote possible. To hire a reputable mover, make sure you ask or require proof of licensed and insured professional moving companies.

Pack everything yourself.

While hiring professional packers can certainly speed up the moving process, it can also weigh it down in terms of cost. Hiring professional packers can get expensive – costing upwards of several hundred dollars. Of course, packing rates vary from moving company to moving company. So make sure to ask how much they charge per hour per mover and how long those packing services typically take. See more tips to lower your cost

Tip: Figure out how many boxes you need.

Examine your contract carefully. ( mostly long distance movers)

Once you’ve decided which professional moving company you’re going to hire, make sure to take a long, hard look at the movers’ contract. Examine and consider your insurance and liability options carefully. While you can certainly save money by choosing the Released Value option, where the mover assumes liability for no more than .60 cents per pound per article, you must consider that this protection is minimal.

If your move is local, you may need to also determine whether to opt for an hourly rate or flat rate. In my experience, the hourly rate usually ended up costing less. However, keep in mind that moving day often comes with surprising complications (like unpredictable weather) that can drag the day out. If you feel that your move could take a long time, the flat rate option may be right for you. Also, take a look at the extra fees and add-ons attached to your estimate to make sure you’re not being overcharged for something you don’t need.

Enlist friends for a DIY move

While not exactly easy, moving yourself is the still the tried-and-true best way to save a boatload of cash during the relocation process. After all, hiring movers is expensive. In fact, according to the American Moving and Storage Association, the average cost of a local household is $2,300 for 4 movers at $200 per hour. If you’re on a tight budget, then embarking on a DIY move may be the best choice for you. I suggest enlisting friends and family to help with the move, so that you don’t have to do all the heavy lifting yourself. Renting a moving truck is another great way to save on costs. For instance, U-Haul’s largest moving truck option holds four-plus bedrooms and costs around $40 to rent. Compare that to the several thousand dollars a moving company will cost you.

Deduct your moving expenses from your taxes

Save those receipts! Depending on your move, you could save a bundle on taxes come next tax season. According to TurboTax, if you move to a new location because of work, you could qualify to use “the IRS Form 3903 to claim the cost of your moving expenses as a deduction on your federal income tax return. The IRS allows taxpayers to deduct eligible moving costs from the taxable income they report on Form 1040.” To find out more. Guide to handling moving expenses here.

Purge before packing

Whether you’re downsizing or simply looking to declutter, purging your unused items is one of the easiest ways to cut costs during a move. By eliminating unworn clothing, out-of-date electronics and unnecessary furniture, your move will weigh less – making the relocation less expensive when hiring a moving company.

How much moving cost in Massachusetts and Rhode Island?

We often get emails along the lines of, “Hi, I’m moving from Attleboro apartment to another or from Attleboro to Providence. How much will my move cost?”

As you can guess, we definitely need more information to provide an accurate quote. (For example, to offer a rate, we need a full inventory of boxes and furniture, a breakdown of the stair and/or elevator situation, and a target date for the move.)

However, even without that information, we can give a general sense of what kind of budget you should plan when looking to hire moving companies in Massachusetts, Boston, Attleboro and surrounding area.

Let’s say you’re moving from a two-bedroom apartment in, say, Boston to another in the same town or moving in Cambridge. You’re flexible so you can move on a weekday in the middle of the month. (This is important, as weekends are more expensive, as are days near the end or the beginning of the month.)

A two-bedroom apartment will usually require a 24- or 26-foot truck and three movers, which would generally cost between $120 and $200 per hour between October and March. Of course, from April through September, the cost would be a little higher — from around $150 per hour up to $250 per hour.

With a larger, say, 5-bedroom house, you might be looking at five or six movers and multiple trucks. That would put the off-season rate between $220 and $400 per hour. Again, the summer and on weekends would have higher rates.

These aren’t firm numbers, and your moving rate will depend on the details of your particular situation. But they should give you a basic idea of what most local movers in Boston area will charge.
